When renovating a home a lot of thought goes into making a floor plan, choosing kitchen and bathroom appliances, selecting a colour scheme and buying furniture pieces. But most homeowners spend surprisingly little time on selecting door and windows furniture (in Dutch: deur- en raamkrukken). Although these serve a functional purpose, door and window furniture are also design elements and can actually add a stylish touch to your home and complement the rest of the interior. So choosing the right lever handle is more important than you would think!
When we renovated our home a few years ago and were faced with choosing door and window fixtures, we found out that there are a lot of options when it comes to design, materials and finish. It seems like a daunting task to make the right choice but by following some guidelines you will be able to find the best option for you and your home.
Together with , a Dutch manufacturer of high quality door and window furniture, I created some tips to help you make the right choice:
– Make sure to select the type of style that best suits the style of your home. Our home was built in the 1920s and we wanted a type of door and window furniture that would naturally fit in the style of our house. The design we picked was Intersteel’s , a handle made of nickel and ebony wood. As the design is based on a model from the 1930s it suits the style of our home perfectly. And most importantly, the chosen design complements our original vintage doors. Intersteel has a range of products that meets various interior styles: modern & clean, elegant, country style or vintage & retro. All designed by well-known architects and designers. For each interior style there is a product line that adds a touch of character and quality to an interior design.
– Go for high quality, as door and window furniture are heavy use items. Intersteel’s door and window furniture is designed with attention for detail and quality. Yet their products are affordable.
– Make sure that all door and window furniture (and locks) in a given area have the same colour and finish. Ideally the entire house is outfitted with products from the same product line.
-Take your time making the right decision. After all you would not rush and buy the first paint colour you see for painting your living room walls. Do research to know what is available on the market. On you can browse through . And you can find a knowledgeable Intesteel retailer who will be able to help you making a choice.
